The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

A monster hunter searches a war-torn land for his adopted daughter. Famous for side quests that are as good as other games' main stories.

What you do

Track monsters, prepare potions and fight with swords and signs, while taking contracts and quests across a huge, grim and beautiful world.

Who it suits

Adults who love stories and grown-up fantasy. Combat is solid rather than brilliant.

01The first hours

The opening in a quiet village shows the game's secret: even a small quest about a stolen frying pan turns into a story. Geralt's dry humour sets the tone.

02Settling in

The middle opens into big regions full of contracts, villages and moral choices with no clean answer. Many players remember a single side quest for years.

03The long road

It is a very long journey, and the expansions are excellent if you want more. Quests are self-contained, which makes them ideal session-sized pieces.

Why it works

  • Outstanding writing and quests
  • A rich, believable world
  • Quests make neat sessions

Watch out for

  • Combat feels dated
  • Huge amount of content can overwhelm

Our verdict

Still one of the great story-driven adventures. Take one quest at a time.
